The full NFL 2014 schedule has been released, and it's now time to pour over it in anticipation of some great matchups. I'm not going to sit here and rehash every participle of the schedule, instead taking my top picks for games throughout the year. Without further ado, let's get going!
A lot of fuss has already been made of the Packers heading to the Northwest, to kick off the season in Seattle. While this will be a great game, I'm much more interested in Sunday nights opening headline game. Peyton Manning hosting Andrew Luck, in what could likely become the AFC Championship game come January.
Colts @ Broncos - Week One
Who could resist? One of the greatest QBs of all time, hosting the man that took his spot on the old throne in Indy. Of course, that's not the only thing to this matchup. The newly constructed Broncos defense will have one of it's biggest tests early in the season, and Andrew Luck definitely won't take it easy on them. On the other side, the fairly quiet side of the equation for the Colts. Their defense has never been up to the standard of their offense and that doesn't changeBroncos @ Seahawks - Week Three
The Superbowl rematch is set to take place in the toughest house to visit in the NFL. I'm not a big Broncos fan, but I'm pretty sure they're not as bad as we all remember them being in XLIII. Games against the Colts and 'Hawks early in the season should be able to put those thoughts to rest. At that point we can get right back to predicting how far the Broncos can go this coming season.Packers @ Saints - Week Eight
I wanted this game to appear during the playoffs last season, but it wasn't to be. The Packers had to play most of last season without Aaron Rodgers, and when combined with an extra year on the back of Eddie Lacey that makes for one dominant looking offense! On the other side, we have a Saints team that could have been vying for an NFC Championship spot, if not for the dominance of a couple of unspecified west coast teams. With some slight improvements from both of these sides they could both be heading back to the post-season with a look at those two un-named sides.
Lions vs Falcons - Week Eight
This one's in here for the sake of it being an interesting game dynamic. 9:30 am (ET) kick-off, as the game is being played over here at Wembley. From a UK perspective I'm looking forward to a reasonably timed game, and I may yet take the trip to London for the occasion, although I'm not sure on that yet.The Lions are a team on the brink of being respectable, although I struggle to see them beating out either the Bears or the Packers for the NFC North.
Raiders @ Rams - Week Thirteen
We'll know how this matchup is going to play out by the time it comes around, but that doesn't stop me from anticipating a great show from two teams that can literally only improve. The Rams arguably played below their ceiling last season, and maybe I'm alone in this but I reckon Sam Bradford can still be their leading QB.
What we all expect to be a much improved Rams team comes up against an already re-structured Raiders outfit. They've brought in, and shipped out, several players during free agency. The draft promises more for both of these teams too.
Seahawks @ Eagles - Week Fourteen
If you love football, this game has to look exciting. Chip Kelly and his unique offense welcome the best defense in football. Like no other game on the calendar, this one will be a war of immovable object versus unstoppable force. Foregoing any major injuries, these two teams could push into the playoffs and make a run at the big game. Only one of them can make it there though, and this game will be a great indication of which way that'll go.There are at least 250 other games to come in 2014, and for the full list head over to NFL.com.
I'm hoping to be able to deliver live coverage of the 2014 season, every Sunday evening. We'll see how it goes, but as of right now that's the plan going into the season.
